Synopsis

Conflicts in name applications regard many parts of the Names Act. Mostly it concerns conflicts between first and last names, and between genders. It includes names from older name traditions in Norway and names in foreign cultures. The cases are often resolved in the applicants’ favor, even if it sometimes requires extensive work with documentation. For immigrants, there can also be conflicts when they want to change to a surname they have had in the family. Such matters can become difficult because the names conflict with several rules, and there is a lack of documentation.
