Variation i gifta kvinnors namnfraser i Finlands kulturliv på 1800- och 1900-talet
Synopsis
The portrayal of surname usage among married women in official sources such as church records in the 19th century seems to contradict the reality described in certain private texts. The variation is undoubtedly due to the different functions of the sources as well as societal development but also gives rise to further examples to illuminate and discuss the potential identity crisis of women in connection with name changes. Comparative material can be found in cultural circles where individuals are often mentioned in newspapers and have left behind letters and documents. In this article, I have chosen to examine name phrases for both the author Fredrika Runeberg and the visual artist Venny Soldan-Brofeldt to complement the picture of the authentic use of surnames among married women in Finland at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
